The fine print: Hotel taxes are included. Does not include airport taxes and fees of about $110 per person. Based on double occupancy; single supplement from $474. Use promotion code FPO200. Note that the $451 rate is based on an Aug. 2, 2008, departure as of June 10; prices fluctuate and will vary based on departure date, availability, and time of booking. (For instance, the advertised starting rate of $333, which was valid as of June 3, no longer seems to be available.) Remember that U.S. citizens arriving by air are required to have a passport to visit the Bahamas. Read these guidelines before you book any Real Deal.

Book by: June 30, 2008.

Why it's a deal: A recent Kayak search for flights from D.C. to Freeport, Bahamas, in early August produced a $364 flight on US Airways. For an additional $197, this package takes care of the four-night resort stay, all meals, and all the taxes. (You can also consider that the $561 price breaks down to $140 per person per night.)

Trip details: The Grand Bahama Island package begins with a flight on US Airways to Freeport, the largest city on Grand Bahama Island.

After landing, you'll transfer to the Island Palm Resort, your base for four nights. The 143-room hotel is close to casinos, shops, restaurants, golf courses, and attractions in downtown Freeport (you can even rent a scooter for $40 per day to explore). You can shop at the Port Lucaya Marketplace, just a few minutes from your hotel; take advantage of the complimentary bus service to nearby Island Seas Beach; or, of course, just lounge by the pool.

When you need a break from the pool or the beach, the hotel offers daily happy hours, dancing, and bingo. Breakfast, lunch, dinner, and four drinks daily are covered by the package price.

Grand Bahama Island has one of the world's largest underwater cave systems and gorgeous coral reefs that make it popular among divers. You can also explore three national parks, including Lucayan National Park, about 25 miles east of Freeport.

US Airways offers several packages to Grand Bahama Island. For example, you can upgrade to the Port Lucaya Resort and Yacht Club from $37 or the Sheraton Grand Bahama Island Our Lucaya Resort for $39.

Although the Bahamas are sunny year-round, the summer is particularly warm, with average temperatures of 84 degrees. It can be humid and muggy, so factor in time for cooling off at the pool or beach. And expect short bursts of rain—after all, summer in the Caribbean means hurricane season. US Airways says it will try to accommodate you if you have to cancel the trip due to weather; the Island Palm Resort will do the same.
